How Can I Tell If I Have a Low Cervix and Need a Special Menstrual Cup?

Determining whether you have a low cervix is the first step necessary to ensure menstrual comfort. You need to check your cervix's position, especially during menstruation when it tends to sit lower.

Steps to ascertain if you have a low cervix:

  • During your period, insert a clean finger into your vagina to gauge how easily you can reach your cervix. Compare it to our downloadable low cervix measuring tool.
  • Note that if your cervix is within the first knuckle, it's considered low, generally being less than 50 mm from the vaginal opening.
  • Reflect on any discomfort you may have experienced with standard menstrual cups, as these could indicate a low cervix.

Understanding your body's needs by determining the position of your cervix during menstruation is crucial in selecting the proper menstrual cup, which offers both comfort and reliability.

A little background on cervix position

One aspect in which MeLuna shines is the wide variety of menstrual cups explicitly offered for users with below-average cervix height.

A low cervix position can make it tricky to comfortably fit a regular menstrual cup.

Want to know what makes this even more challenging? Your cervical position changes throughout your cycle, generally being lowest at the beginning of your period.

That’s why, when customers measure at any other time of the cycle, the length seems manageable. But the cup is too long at the start of the actual period.

You will find many great suggestions online for measuring your cervix height. Many of them include landmarks like knuckles.

Introducing the MeLuna Menstrual Cup/Cervix Position Measuring Tool

Vaginas are different. So are fingers. Because of that, we developed this downloadable tool to measure your cervix.

First Things First: The Purpose of this Tool

This tool will help you determine whether you need a low-cervix cup or whether a standard-height cup will work.

This tool will NOT determine what size low cervix you should order. The following guidelines choose diameter/Size:

How to use the Cervix Measuring Tool for Menstrual Cup Selection

In the print, live-sized MeLuna menstrual cups are next to the ruler. Comparisons are straightforward that way!

Of course, if you need it to fit even shallower, you can also trim off the handle completely. Keep those options in mind. The tool is just a guide to give you a better visual of what you are working with!

Do NOT insert the paper printout into your vagina! Download the tool and print it at 100% size (no enlarging, fitting to page, etc).

Wash your hands! You will use your finger. Insert it into your vagina and gently locate the cervix. Place a second finger right where the entrance of the vagina is on the inserted finger.

You can now hold the finger next to the tool and get an idea of what cup height could work for you.

Please note: This tool is designed to help you decide between shorty or standard cups. It is not intended to determine your diameter size. Please consult the size chart for diameter.

Many shorty users choose to go up a size to accommodate for the loss in volume of the shorter cups.

Remember, this graphic is designed to show the maximum height you can accommodate. If more length is available, all the better! Wearing your cup higher up and away from the vaginal entrance is no problem at all.
