How to Choose the Right Menstrual Cup
The best menstrual cup for you is the one that fits your anatomy and stays comfortable and secure. With MeLuna, you can adjust four main factors: cup height, firmness, diameter, and handle style.
1. Choose Your Cup Height
Standard Height is the best starting point for most users. Choose Shorty if you have a low cervix or standard cups feel too long. High-cervix options add extra reach for removal.
Compare Cup Heights →2. Choose Your Firmness
MeLuna Classic works well for most users. MeLuna Sport is firmer and resists compression from strong pelvic floor muscles, but its firmness can make folding and removal more challenging.
Compare Classic & Sport →3. Choose Your Diameter
Diameter plays an important role in creating a reliable seal. Flow matters for capacity, but light flow alone is not a reason to choose the smallest menstrual cup diameter.
View the Menstrual Cup Size Chart →4. Choose Your Handle
Ball is the shortest and most discreet. Ring is easy to locate and grip. Stem provides the most added reach. The cup body itself stays the same.
Compare Handle Styles →MeLuna Menstrual Cup Sizes
MeLuna offers four diameters so you have more room to adjust cup fit. These are common starting points, not rigid rules. Your previous menstrual cup experience, anatomy, comfort, and seal are all useful clues.
| Size | Common Starting Point | Keep in Mind |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Younger users and many teens | Do not choose Small only because your flow is light. The cup still needs enough diameter to seal. |
| Medium | Many users who have not given birth vaginally | A common starting size, but previous cup fit and body changes matter. |
| Large | Many users after one vaginal birth or those wanting more capacity | Provides more diameter and capacity than Medium. |
| XL | Often chosen after multiple vaginal births or for very heavy flow | MeLuna's largest diameter and capacity. Choose it when the larger diameter is also comfortable for you. |
What Makes MeLuna Different From Other Menstrual Cups?
Menstrual cup fit is personal. MeLuna gives you more ways to adjust that fit instead of limiting you to only one or two cup configurations.
Two Cup Heights
Choose Standard Height for most cervix heights or Shorty for a low cervix. High-cervix users can also choose handle options that add reach for easier removal.

MeLuna Classic is the everyday choice for most users. MeLuna Sport is our firmest material and is designed to resist compression during exercise or for users with strong pelvic floor muscles.
Learn About MeLuna Sport →Four Diameters
Small, Medium, Large, and XL give you more options for finding a diameter that creates a comfortable, reliable seal while providing the capacity you need.

Choose Ball, Ring, or Stem based on how much reach and grip you prefer during removal. Handle choice does not change the size of the cup body.

MeLuna menstrual cups are made from medical-grade thermoplastic elastomer, or TPE, rather than silicone. MeLuna cups are made in Germany.
Options for Different Needs
MeLuna offers menstrual cup options for low cervix users, athletes, teens, heavy flow, and people switching from another cup brand.

What is the best menstrual cup for a low cervix?
A shorter cup can be more comfortable when your cervix sits low. MeLuna Shorty cups are 30–45% shorter than their Standard Height counterparts, depending on size, while still offering four diameter choices. See our Low Cervix Menstrual Cup Guide.
What menstrual cup is best for exercise?
If strong pelvic floor muscles compress your current cup and cause leaks during exercise, a firmer cup may help. MeLuna Sport is our firmest menstrual cup material and is designed to resist compression. Learn more about menstrual cups for sport and exercise.
What size menstrual cup should I choose?
Start with diameter for seal and fit, then consider cup height, firmness, and capacity. Age and birth history can provide useful starting points, but previous cup experience and your own anatomy matter too. View the full MeLuna Size Chart.
Does menstrual flow determine cup size?
Not by itself. Flow helps determine how much capacity you may want, but diameter helps the menstrual cup create a reliable seal. Choosing a very small cup only because you have light flow can lead to leaks if the diameter is not right for your body.
Why are MeLuna menstrual cups made from TPE?
MeLuna cups are made from medical-grade thermoplastic elastomer, or TPE. This is different from the silicone used by many other menstrual cup brands and gives MeLuna its distinctive material and firmness options.

Many products made previously out of rubber or silicone are now made of TPE. Especially when it comes to medical devices like menstrual cups, there are good reasons for this:
- Safety
- Health
- Comfort
- Recyclability
- Eco-Friendly Production
Safety: Less Likely to Harbor Bacteria Associated with TSS
Recently, independent studies on menstrual cups by a microbial expert in France have shown that cups made from TPE are less likely to harbor harmful bacteria associated with TSS than menstrual cups made from silicone.
Health: Instances of Allergies
TPE has a lower incidence of causing an allergic reaction than silicone.
Comfort: TPE adjusts its shape to its environment
TPE is also a very pliable material that readily conforms to its surroundings for an even more custom feel for the wearer. You may find that your TPE cup becomes a bit more oval in shape over time after adjusting to its wearer’s shape. This is nothing to worry about. The cup will again conform to your shape the next time you wear it. If you ever want to return the cup to its original completely round shape, boil it in hot water.
Recyclability: Thermoset versus Thermoplastic
Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) are better for the environment than materials like rubber or silicone for several reasons. Thermoplasticity means a product can be reshaped using heat. Thermoset means the final product cannot be remolded or heated after the initial forming. Both silicone and latex are thermoset materials. TPEs can be reprocessed using heat, which means manufacturers can reuse scrap materials. If a product is made incorrectly or needs changes during testing, it can be reheated and reshaped without creating waste. In the production of MeLuna cups, there is virtually no waste. In contrast, thermoset materials like silicone and latex have more limited options. While you can grind up a tire to make material for a track at a school, you cannot change the rubber into a new, recyclable product. Thermoset materials are not recyclable in the original sense of the word.
More Eco-Friendly Production: Energy and Water
A comparison of the silicone production process also favors TPE when it comes to being environmentally friendly. Silicone production requires a high amount of energy, significantly more than TPE, due to the high temperature at which it needs to be processed. The process of manufacturing silicone also requires immense amounts of water.
This is not the case in TPE production, and in the manufacturing of the MeLuna cups themselves, any water used for cooling is recycled.
