Smelly Cup? Here's Why!

MeLuna USA  |  May 19th 2021

Are you frustrated with a bad smelling menstrual cup? We can help!

We'd love to tell you that, unlike other brands, your MeLuna menstrual cup will never smell but unfortunately that would not be true.

All menstrual cups can develop an unpleasant odor.

How Menstrual Cup Odor Develops

The smell is caused by protein compounds in the blood. Because of the variations of proteins in the blood it is possible that a menstrual cup suddenly takes on a strange smell, even though it has been cleaned as usual.

Generally though the odor is often related to how long you have been wearing the cup between cleanings.

How You can Prevent Menstrual Cup Odor

Odor formation can be prevented by not wearing the cup for too long periods of time. The maximum time span to wear the cup should not exceed 8 hours to 12 hours in the body.

To prevent odors always COLD rinse the cup after removal. Don't heat disinfect a cup that has not been cleaned yet.

How to Get Rid of Unpleasant Menstrual Cup Smell

Unpleasant odors usually disappear when you put your well cleaned cup for a few days in a dry, well ventilated place.

If you need a little extra help, consider a disinfection product that also removes some stains and odors at the same time like Milton Tabs which you can find here
