MeLuna USA Is Closing: A Personal Message from Karin

Dear MeLuna Friends,

I have some difficult news to share. MeLuna USA will be closing before the end of 2026.

This is not how I imagined things ending, and I want to share a little about what brought us here.

For years, I've poured my time, energy, and resources into making MeLuna USA a place where people could find menstrual products that truly work for them. I've loved helping customers find their perfect cup, answering questions, and hearing how much of a difference our products have made in their lives.

But running a small business has become increasingly difficult. Despite all our efforts to grow, sales have not been enough to sustain the business. I've been working a separate full-time job to support MeLuna USA financially, while continuing to run the business outside those hours.

I've done this because I believed in our products and in the people we serve. But the reality is that this arrangement cannot continue indefinitely.

Recently, our German manufacturer informed me that they would not be renewing their FDA registration for the U.S. market. Increasing import costs and rising FDA fees have made serving the U.S. market increasingly expensive, with those costs growing faster than sales revenue.

As a result, the manufacturer has made the business decision to withdraw from the U.S. market.

The decision came on relatively short notice and has brought forward the end of a business that was already facing serious financial challenges.

While the timing was unexpected, I recognize that the larger challenges were already there.

Our Closing Sale: 33% Off Everything

As we prepare to close, we're curently offering 33% off all remaining inventory, while supplies last.

If you've found a MeLuna cup that works for you, now is a good time to purchase a replacement or an extra cup. We won't be restocking.

The 33% closing discount replaces all other discounts and promotional offers. Previous discounts and promotions will no longer apply and cannot be combined with the closing sale.

What Happens to Domino Pads (and with it DominoWear)?

Several customers have asked whether Domino Pads will continue after MeLuna USA closes.

Unfortunately, we will also be discontinuing Domino Pads.

We've always believed in using high-quality fabrics and paying fair wages to the people who sew our pads. These choices are important to us, but they've also meant that our profit margins have always been small.

Reusable cloth menstrual pads are classified as Class I medical devices and are subject to FDA establishment registration requirements.

For 2027, the standard annual FDA registration fee is $13,785. We would have to spend much of the year making and selling cloth pads just to cover that fee.

We'll continue making Domino Pads throughout November, so there is still time to purchase your favorites.

I also wanted to mention that I dye our bamboo fabrics by hand and won't be dyeing any additional batches. As our remaining fabric inventory gets smaller, bamboo Domino Pads will transition to assorted colors rather than offering individual color choices at checkout. You'll still receive the same quality pads, just with a little less choice in color.

We're also opening a new cloth pad fabric section on our website, where you'll be able to purchase some of the same quality materials we use for Domino Pads for your own DIY sewing projects.

We hope this gives our customers who enjoy sewing an opportunity to continue making reusable pads with fabrics they already know and love.

I know some of you may have ideas for ways to keep Domino Pads going, and I appreciate that you care enough to think about them. But after much consideration, I've decided to close this chapter completely rather than look for another way to continue the business.

As difficult as this goodbye is, I'm also looking forward to having more time for the things I enjoy, including more hiking, more pottery making, and more helping horses in need.

What Happens Next?

We plan to stop accepting orders before Christmas, although some products and configurations may sell out sooner.

MeLuna Germany will remain available for product questions after we close, but they do not ship menstrual cups directly to the United States.

One Last Thing You Can Do for Us

MeLuna's wide range of sizes, heights, firmness levels, and handle options means we have to maintain an inventory of 144 different cup models. With the short notice of our closing, we're left with a substantial amount of inventory to sell.

If you'd like to help us one last time, please spread the word! Tell your friends and family, share our closing sale on social media, or mention it in online communities where people are looking for menstrual cup recommendations.

Discounts will increase as we get closer to closing, but the selection will get smaller as products sell out. If you have a favorite MeLuna cup, we recommend getting it while your preferred configuration is still available.

Every purchase and every recommendation will help us make the most of these final weeks.

Why Are FDA Fees So Difficult for Small Businesses?

Reusable menstrual cups and cloth pads are regulated as medical devices in the United States.

For 2027, the standard annual FDA establishment registration fee is $13,785. That standard fee is the same whether you're a small, independently owned business or a multimillion-dollar company.

The financial burden on small businesses has drastically increased over the years. In 2012, changes to FDA establishment registration requirements expanded the businesses required to pay annual registration fees. By 2014, the annual fee was $3,313. Today, at $13,785, it has more than quadrupled in just 13 years.

You can still find handmade reusable menstrual pads offered by independent sellers on marketplaces such as Etsy. I can't speak to whether individual sellers are registered with the FDA or how consistently registration requirements are enforced.

What I can say is that Domino Pads is already an established, registered business. Continuing to operate means continuing to meet the applicable regulatory requirements, including paying the annual registration fee.

For a small business with narrow profit margins, that expense alone can make continuing production financially impossible.

We even explored the FDA's financial hardship waiver. Unfortunately, we were informed that demonstrating hardship would require an active bankruptcy proceeding. And even then, the waiver would only apply to one year's fee.

For a small business trying to stay open, that's not a practical solution.
